Kathryn Markle McHugh

Kathryn (Kitty) Markle McHugh, 75, of St. Simons Island, GA, passed away on May 24th, 2021. Born in Mobile, AL, she was adopted by C.C. and Adine Markle of Auburn, AL when her twin sister met minimum release weight. She was a graduate of Auburn High School and Auburn University where she was a member of the Tri Delta Sorority. She graduated from the School of Pharmacy in 1969. She began working in her father's drug store, Glendean Drugs at age 16. She later became a RPh after interning and started working as a Hospital Pharmacist in 1972. She was employed by several hospitals in Alabama and Georgia until moving to St Simons Island in 1998. She returned to Retail Pharmacy after the move to the island and was employed by CVS Pharmacy and Winn-Dixie as Pharmacist in Charge. She had many loyal customers and felt the need to retire after being diagnosed with Stage 4 Breast Cancer and beginning chemotherapy. She did not want chemotherapy to adversely affect her performance. After nearly 60 years of pharmacy experience, she was able to retire and enjoyed extended travel to Ireland, Scotland, and Hawaii. She also found great joy visiting her children, their spouses, and her grandsons who live in Texas and Colorado. Kitty enjoyed researching her family lineage and was able to identify her birth mother and contact and meet several siblings and cousins. Kitty was an avid Auburn Football fan and enjoyed being a member of the Golden Isles Auburn Club where she cheered on her Tigers. War Eagle!

She was preceded in death by her parents, C.C. and Adine Markle of Auburn.

She is survived by her loving husband, Don C. McHugh and her children, Don Christopher McHugh (Melissa) and Laurie McHugh Kjeldgaard (Eric). She is also survived by her twin sister, Betty Sibley (Bruce Person), brother Charles Markle (Ellen Behrend), sister in law Pam Wootton (Dave); grandchildren, Wesley and Nick McHugh of Burleson, TX and Graham Kjeldgaard of Golden, CO. Nieces and nephews; Markelle Thompson (Jake and Kendal), Bryan Sibley (Beth), Patrick Wootton (Allison, Blake, Morgan), Kimberly Harn (Marty, Logan, Hudson), Stephen and Elise Markle. Several additional family members including Linda Robitzsch (Carl), Debbie Schmidt, Carole Selby; and Jennifer Shuler (Ben and Anderson) and Michelle St Clair (Scott, Samantha, and Branden) who she considered second daughters.

A bedside visitation and memorial were held at the Hospice of the Golden Isles where she received excellent and compassionate care during her final days. Cremation was performed by Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home of Brunswick, GA. A Celebration of Life is planned for later this year in Auburn, AL with more details to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for any donations in memory of Kathryn (Kitty) McHugh to go to the Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick, GA , Glynn County Animal Shelter, or the Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia.
