Larry Kohlhoff, 76, of St Simons Island, Georgia, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2024, at Sears Skilled Nursing and Rehab in Brunswick, following a history of health issues related to cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
Larry was born in Hagerstown, MD, and graduated from Wayne High School in New Jersey and Baldwin-Wallace College in Ohio. He loved being with people and definitely had the gift of gab. He never met a stranger. He married his best friend and tennis partner, Jennifer, his “first wife,” as he liked to joke, in 1974, and moved to the Atlanta area for 37 years where they raised two wonderful sons, Nathan and Jeff.
In his early years in Atlanta, he was a member of the High Country Rugby Football Club. He coached Little League baseball in Marietta, Georgia, for several years and loved restoring old cars. He was a proud member of the Rolls Royce Owners Club and took particular pleasure in his 1957 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud I. His greatest passion was his extensive model train collection which he began cultivating in 1974. He also volunteered with CASA and enjoyed mentoring autistic children. He loved watching his grandchildren play softball and baseball and was a very vocal spectator!
During his years in the Atlanta area, Larry ran his own business as a commercial and residential general contractor. He started a long tradition of taking family vacations to St.Simons in 1979, and enjoyed many fun-filled days on East Beach, before making St. Simons his permanent home in 2011.
Larry is preceded in death by his mother and father, Ethel and Frank Kohlhoff. He is survived by his brother, Jim (Sheryl), and by his wife of 49 years, Jennifer, his son Nathan (Shonda) of St. Simons Island, his son Jeff (Lauren) of Atlanta, and three grandchildren, Brianna, Aaron, and Emilie.
A small family service will be held on the beach at St. Simons Island at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would be grateful for donations to either the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
