Linda Lou Wright, 77, of St. Simons Island, died at Hospice of the Golden Isles on December 26, 2024, surrounded by loving family and an incredibly compassionate hospice team. Linda was born on October 27, 1947, to Lester and Wilma LeCompte in Beech Grove, Indiana. She grew up on a farm in Hope, Indiana, with her sister, sidekick, and lifelong friend, Lois LeCompte Dalton.
Linda attended Pompano Beach High School, Florida where she met her future husband, Richard Wright, and she graduated from Florida State University with a bachelor’s degree. She later obtained her master’s degree and Doctorate in education from Georgia Southern University and was a distinguished member of the first doctoral graduating class at GSU. Linda was perhaps best well known locally as a beloved English teacher then school administrator at Glynn Academy. She imparted her literary passion and knowledge to decades of students and was awarded runner-up for Georgia Teacher of the Year in 1982.
Linda enjoyed traveling and was always up for a new travel adventure, with family or her girlfriends, in the States and abroad. She was a voracious reader and especially enjoyed British mysteries. Linda was an active member of her book club and bridge club and a faithful member and choir member, of St. Simons United Methodist Church. She served on the Board of Directors for the The Coastal Symphony of Georgia. Linda remained an expert grammarian throughout her life and unfailingly cringed when she encountered poor spelling and grammar. With her cumulative literary expertise, she was always a sought-after team member when playing Trivial Pursuit. Linda was a life-long FSU Seminoles fan, even when they had crummy football seasons.
Linda was a faithful friend to many, and she deeply loved her family. She was proud of her children and grandchildren and loved celebrating their accomplishments and supporting their dreams. She regularly nurtured their academic and musical pursuits. In her later years, Linda met the second love of her life, John Harper, and they enjoyed many adventures and special times together.
Linda was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Dean Wright, in 2008. She is survived by her children, Karen Brubaker Miller (Mark) and Jeffrey Raymond Wright (Stacey), and grandchildren, Ben (Alexis), Elizabeth, Megan, and Christian, sister Lois LeCompte Dalton, niece Michelle Torson (Philip), great-niece and great-nephew, Madison and Chandler, sister-in-law, Laurel Townsend, and niece and nephew, Kristin Larson and Scott Townsend.
Her memorial service will take place on Saturday, January 4, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Simons United Methodist Church, with a reception following. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Hospice of the Golden Isles, 1692 Glynco Pkwy, Brunswick, GA 31525 or www.hospice.me.
Our family thanks the multitude of friends, neighbors, and family members who circled around Linda and supported her and our family through the last part of her journey. We are grateful to Dr. Abraham Cheong, Dr. Timothy Jamieson, and the SGHS Cancer Care Center team for their compassionate care of Linda. Special thanks to Linda’s pastor, Marcia Cochran, for her spiritual support and friendship to Linda and our family. Thank you all for allowing Linda to face her illness courageously and depart this world for the next with grace and dignity.
