Affectionately known as “Sister,” Lue Gene was born on January 25, 1935, in Waycross, Georgia, to the late Corean Pearson and Ancil Pinkney. She attended Center High School in Waycross and went on to live a life marked by dedication, service, and quiet strength.
Lue Gene was employed as a baker with the Glynn County Board of Education Food and Nutrition Program at Brunswick High School. She will be fondly remembered by many for her delicious, freshly baked cinnamon rolls that brought joy to countless students and staff. Despite her petite stature, she surprised many by driving an 18-wheel truck—an example of her determination and fearless spirit.
A devoted woman of faith, Lue Gene was an ordained Elder and held a national office in Holy Band of Inspiration Deliverance Temple under Bishop Harry Brown. She served faithfully until her health no longer allowed her to attend regularly, remaining a dedicated member until her passing.
Her passion for ministry extended into the community, where she founded a Bible study group that brought together believers from Salem Baptist Church, Haven Chapel Methodist Church, and later Macedonia Baptist Church. This group became known as the Sterling Community Bible Study. She took immense pride in her students, many of whom grew into strong church leaders and devoted followers of Christ. Their spiritual growth was one of her greatest joys.
Lue Gene leaves to cherish her memory three children: Allen “Jacky” Brooks and D. Madean “Jo” Brooks Brown, both of Brunswick, Georgia, and Effie “Miki” Brooks of Fayetteville, North Carolina; one daughter-in-law, Bernetha (Kenneth) Pinkney; two siblings, Katie “Cookie” (Robert) Stephens and Lawton Pinkney, both of Brunswick, Georgia; one sister-in-law, Verneida (Prince) Pinkney of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and one cousin she raised, Betty (Nathaniel) Alexander.
She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren—whom she affectionately called her “rat heads”: Carol, Karla, Elzie, Adrienne, William, Steven, Carlotta, Theresa, Paul, Kalvin, Kimberly, Joshua, and Argie—along with numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Matthew Frank Brooks; grandson, Ronald “Ronnie” Gardner; siblings Prince “Buddy” Pinkney, Ancil “Bubba” Pinkney, Ajear “AJ” Pinkney, Charles “Lemis” Pinkney, Grace “Gracie” Holmes, and Melvie “Melva” Jean Whitehead; as well as numerous aunts and uncles.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, 916 Pennick Road, Brunswick, Georgia 31525. Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home of Brunswick, Georgia, has been entrusted with final arrangements.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Sears Nursing and Rehabilitation and Hospice of the Golden Isles for the compassionate care shown to their beloved mother. They also sincerely thank all who have offered prayers, calls, messages, cards, gifts, and words of comfort during this time.
May the grace of God and the sweet communion of the Holy Spirit be with you always.
