

Mr. Tony Martin, 93, of St. Simons Island, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Friday, the 2nd of February 2018, surrounded by family. He was born in Brunswick, Georgia on the 4th of May 1924 to the late Jack and Mary Dorees Martin. He was predeceased by brothers Arthur and Jack Martin. In addition to his lovely wife of 68 years Ginger, he is survived by his five children: Toni Johnson (Steve), Jacksonville, FL; Cheryl Wilkes (Jimmy), Braselton, GA; Terri Braddock, Fredrick, MD; Rocky Martin (Kathy), Burlington, IA; and Jet Martin, San Diego, CA; Six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Tony attended Glynn County public schools and graduated from Glynn Academy in 1942.He was a prolific basketball and football player known for his physical presence on the field earning the nickname “Bone Crusher”. After high school he attended UGA and was invited by Coach Wally Butts to try out for football. However, World War II was ongoing and Tony enlisted in the Navy where he served on the USS Pennsylvania until the culmination of the War. Tony later served additional time in service to our nation during the Korean Conflict. Upon his return to Brunswick, he continued Federal service at Glynco and FLETC as a civil servant where he eventually retired in 2001 after his distinguished 55 year career. For his dedicated service, he and Ginger were flown to Washington, D.C. where he was recognized by Congress for his lifetime achievements.
To support his large family, Tony also worked a second job with Sears for 38 years. Tony was also well respected by local youth for his coaching abilities in baseball, basketball, and football. Local players were known to specifically request Tony as their coach. Tony will be remembered as a kind and gentle soul and for the love he shared with his family and country. He will be greatly missed by all, but never forgotten. May he forever rest in peace.
A celebration of Tony’s life will be held at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Chapel on Saturday the 10th of February at 5:30 PM with and reception to follow. In lieu of sending flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Tony’s memory to the Hospice of the Golden Isles 1692 Glynco Parkway Brunswick, GA 31525.
