

Mary Hurst Theobald, died April 19, 2013, was born 1934 in Rochester, New York to Mr. Victor Waldemar Hurst Jr. and his wife, Mary Sage Hurst. In her youth, Mary attended Eastman School of Music. She attended Pembroke College, later graduating and receiving her Bachelor of Arts and nursing degrees from Johns Hopkins University. In 1961 she married her husband of 53 years, Robert Alfred Theobald III of Newport, Rhode Island, with whom she would spend many years sailing, traveling and raising their children. She and her husband lived for years in Bethesda, Maryland during which time she worked at American University for 25 years including as administrative assistant to the Dean of Graduate Studies and to the Faculty Senate. Mary was a talented pianist and artist who also loved the theatre and ballet. She was an avid traveler, traveling to Europe, Ukraine, Russia, Poland, Egypt, Alaska, Tahiti, Kenya, and the Caribbean. She loved to spend time at her family’s landmark historical summer home, located in Ontario, Canada, surrounded by her family and friends. She was an accomplished bridge player. Mary and her husband retired to St. Simon’s Island where she became active with Christ Church in St. Simon’s Island, Ga., singing in the choir and donating time to local community endeavors. Mary was a loving wife and mother who was kind, compassionate, and a lover of animals and people. She loved and was loved by all who knew her.
She is survived by husband Robert Alfred Theobald III; brother Dr. Victor W. Hurst III of St. Petersburg, FL and sister Hon. Patricia Ann Hurst, of Providence, RI.; children Robert Alfred Theobald IV of Alexandria, VA, Mary Celeste Kenny of Lucketts, VA. and Heather Louise Wuthrich of Hillsborough, NC.; and grandson, Colin Wuthrich, of Hillsborough, NC.
Services to be held Tuesday April 22, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. at Christ Church Frederica, 6329 Frederica Road, St. Simons, GA. Burial will be private.
