
Mildred Hawkins Jayne, 94, of Jekyll Island, died Saturday, February 5th 2011 at her home. Mrs. Jayne was born December 11, 1917, in Eastport, New York the daughter of Frank and Ida Martha Hawkins. She was married to Clarence Russell Jayne. Mrs. Jayne received her Elementary Teaching Certificate from State University of New York at Oneonta. She then completed her Bachelor of Science degree at Hofstra University. She was the remedial reading specialist in the East Meadow school system in East Meadow, Long Island.
After retirement, she and her husband moved to Jekyll Island. While living on Jekyll Island, she was active in the Jekyll Island Community Presbyterian Church, the Art Association and the Jekyll Singers. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. She is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth Jayne (Mrs. George) Edwards of Edwardsville, Illinois, three granddaughters, Sarah Jayne (Mrs. David) Weyhrich, Amy Elizabeth (Mrs. Robert) Bane, and Martha Howland (Mrs. Graham) Morin. Also surviving are her four great grand children, Allison Jayne and Samantha Weyhrich, and Thomas and Laura Bane. In addition, she is survived by Roger Jayne and several other nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for Mrs. Jayne will be held at 10:00 on Monday, February 21st at the Jekyll Presbyterian Church, Rev. Grady Allison presiding. Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. www.edomillerandsons.com
