A loving wife, mother, and friend to many, Phoebe Carolyn Cochran Griffin, age 83, died peacefully, surrounded by her family, on April 12, 2021, in Cumming, Georgia.

Phoebe was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, to Sara Maude Cochran on October 2, 1937, and was raised in Statesville, North Carolina. An accomplished basketball athlete, she graduated from nearby Barium Springs High School in 1955 and attended Mitchell College in Statesville, NC earning an Associate Degree in 1957. On Christmas break with her family in Brunswick, Georgia, in 1956, she met her future husband, Delburt Griffin, and the two married in June, 1957. Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Delburt Griffin raised four fine sons and built a loving 64-year marriage.

She was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Waycross, Georgia, on January 16, 1960 and with her husband and young family attended the Brunswick East Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Brunswick for many years. After moving to Cumming in recent years, Phoebe and Delburt attended the Johns Creek Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Wherever they lived, Phoebe loved to serve Jehovah.

In addition to being a mother and homemaker, Phoebe worked for Brunswick Pulp and Paper Co., Continental Telephone Company, and Alta Telecom in the Atlanta area. She retired from a long career as the Director of Lending for Glynn Teachers Federal Credit Union (now Marshland Community Federal Credit Union), retiring in 2000.

After retirement Phoebe and Delburt moved to Fernandina Beach, Florida, where Phoebe started her own business, joyfully collecting and selling antiques in both Georgia and Florida. As a lifetime gardener, she now had more time to cultivate the many varieties of flowering plants she kept both inside and outside their home. She cherished time with Delburt, their children and grandchildren, extended family, and two cats. Many days and evenings were spent cooking out or taking long walks with family on the Georgia and Florida beaches near home both before and after retirement. Living close to Neptune Park, the pier, and the beaches of St Simons Island, Georgia, and in later years at Amelia Island, Florida, gave Phoebe and Delburt and family frequent access to the sand and surf they all loved.

Phoebe is survived by Delburt Griffin, her beloved husband of 64 years; three sons: Alvin Delburt (Burt) Griffin, Jr. (Cameron) of Shalimar, Florida; Jeffrey Tyler Griffin (Michelle) of Atlanta, Georgia; and Jonathan David Griffin (Paula) of Cumming, Georgia; four grandchildren: McKennon Griffin of Shalimar, Florida; Matthew Griffin of Benton, Tennessee; Laura Griffin of Nashville, Tennessee, and Jackson Griffin of Cumming. She was preceded in death by her second son, Michael Mimbs Griffin (Alice) of Nashville, Tennessee. Phoebe is also survived by sisters Barbara (Mike) Cavanaugh of Cuero, Texas; Jean Kuykendall of Morganton, North Carolina; by brother Herbert Adrian Cochran (Thoa-Kim) of Los Angeles, California; by nieces Lisa Berl of Charleston, South Carolina; Anne (Colby) Freeman of Moraga, California; Elizabeth (Brian) Shelburne of Wilmington, North Carolina; nephews Tom (Erin) Cochran of Washington, DC, and Miles Sivertsen Hair of Raleigh, North Carolina. Phoebe is also survived by five great nieces: Caitlyn, Brooke, Catherine, Charlotte, and Mathilda; and two great nephews: Cameron and Macsen. All of these family members from time to time have gathered at South Carolina and Florida beaches to celebrate our lives together. Phoebe Carolyn Griffin will be deeply missed.

Visitation will be held at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home on Saturday, April 17th, 2021 from 5:00 to 8:00p.m. Funeral services will be held at Edo Miller & Sons Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, April 18th, 2021 at 2:00p.m. Earl Cartright of the East Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses will preside with a private family interment to follow on Monday.

Phoebe and Delburt were always such an endearing couple to those of us that can witness their tender love for each other. Their marriage and lives together proved to be what the Bible says, a gift and a perfect present from above from the Father of celestial lights (James 1:17) We miss seeing Phoebe walking hand in hand with her dear husband. But we also take comfort in knowing that Phoebe's absence is temporary and she will once again be reunited with her loved ones to enjoy all the beautiful life moments that our loving God kindly gives.

I met Delburt years ago when he learned to fly with me. During that time I met Phoebe and I know every one who knew her will agree that she was a shining example of how people should treat others. The words kindness, generosity and decency come to mind. They were a couple working together to make life better for others. She will be missed.
