Rodney George Downie

Rodney George Downie, age 67, died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 in the presence of his family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Leona Davis Downie and George Edwin Downie, and by his brothers Roger Vance Downie and Robert Edwin Downie.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Janice Newbern Downie, by his daughter, Lea Downie, his son, Ryan Downie (Elizabeth), his granddaughter Ruby Downie, all of Brunswick, and by his sister Jackie Suarez, of Keystone Heights, Florida, and by many nieces and nephews.

Rodney was a 1968 graduate of Glynn Academy and attended Brunswick College. He worked in Information Technology for more than 40 years retiring from Georgia-Pacific in 2006 after 21 years of service. He was most recently employed by Allied Universal at Frederica Township. He was a member of Christian Renewal Church.

Rodney considered his family to be his top priority and was a loving husband and father and a friend to many. Above all he loved the Lord and is now rejoicing in his homegoing.

Active pallbearers will be Paul Spence, Richard Gibbs, Steve Roberts, Pete Richards, Mike Lee and Mike Haulman. Honorary pallbearers will be Tim Martin, John Huff, Mark Mendenhall, Mittie Waye, Sharon Sloan, Arnold Adcock, Tom Scott, Joe Murph, Charles Ricks, and Avon Gwynn.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 Friday evening at Edo Miller funeral home. A celebration of life will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, January 21, 2017 at Christian Renewal Church in Brunswick. Internment will follow at Brunswick Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to Heritage Christian Academy, Care Net of Coastal Georgia, No Kill Glynn County or the donor’s favorite charity.

The family would like to express their thanks to Dr. Heery, Dr. Shark and staffs and especially to the nurses and staff of the SICU unit of Southeast Georgia Health System.
