Sam was born on August 13, 1945 in Woodstock, Virginia to parents Howard T. and Helen S. Hicks. She was an Episcopalian and a member of the choir at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Alexandria in her early years. She studied Art Design at Louisburg College in North Carolina. After graduation, she married Jack Pendziwater and worked as a real estate agent in Alexandria.
Sam moved to Annapolis, Maryland with her second husband, Steve Livesay. It was here that she learned to sail while working at Backyard Boats. She became an avid sailor. Sam’s sailboat was a CSY 37 Sandpiper that she sailed from Annapolis to the Keys and the Virgin Islands several times.
Sam moved to St Simons in the 1980’s. She was the companion of Oliver Eugene “Killer” and their cocker spaniel, Zoe. They worked at the Golden Isles Marina and played at the Bait Shack. Sam had a great love for dogs and said her only regret was she wanted more! After a valiant fight with cancer, Sam died and went to heaven with Killer and Zoe. She is survived by nineteen first cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 26th at 11:00 am at Holy Nativity Episcopal Church, 615 Mallory Street, St. Simons Island, with the Reverend Thomas Townsend officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sam’s name to the Holy Nativity Church.
