

Thomas J. Walters was born in Columbus Ohio in 1931 to Mary and Ben Walters, graduated from The Ohio State University School of Architecture, College of Engineering in 1955, married Marlene in 1953, moved to Wilmington Delaware in 1958 and set up his practice as an architect that lasted for forty years. Some of his school projects were: Red Clay Elementary, Richardson Park High School, Appoquinimink Middle School, Dickinson High School, Kent County Orthopedic School. He also designed Delaware Trust, Wilmington Trust, Wilmington Savings Fund Society banks, as well as constructing religious buildings; Adas Kodesch Shel Emeth Synagogue; St. Dennis Roman Catholic Church; St. Stevens Lutheran Church; and he designed Spas in Delaware, Pittsburg Pennsylvania, and Scarsdale New York. He also planned, public works projects for the Delaware State Police, Veterans of Foreign War buildings, Delaware Fire School, and many single-family homes.
Past President of the Committee of 100; and past President of the Wilmington West Rotary Club, he was also a Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary International.
Tom’s United States Army career spanned over thirty-two years of service with several Army Commendations and Medals, commending his “outstanding meritorious service in the Military Intelligence Branch United States Army Reserve.”
Tom also served as Commander of the Wilmington Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars.
He was a true Patriot and Planner, and a kind caring supportive husband, dad and poppie.
Surrounded by his family, Tom died at Brunswick Hospital from congestive heart failure and will be buried at Arlington Cemetery September 20, 2022 with full military honors.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-nine years, Marlene, and three daughters. Debbie, and husband Joe Chickadel; Becky and husband Bud Rafferty; Carrie and husband, Bill Sharp; and his six grandchildren, Mike and Ben Orga; Patty Wilkerson; Kirsten, Julia and Evan Sharp; great grandson, Dominic Orga and predeceased by granddaughter, Megan Rafferty.
