Wallace was born in Spartanburg, SC to parents William Furman and Alice Ellis Mathis. Alice would remarry to James Raphael “Rufus” Womble, who would become a father and instrumental part of Wallace’s life. They relocated to the Nags Head, NC area. Once he completed high school, Wallace joined the US Navy where he was stationed aboard the USS Forrestal supercarrier. After completing his tour of duty, Wallace started his own business as an electrical contractor, and then went to work for the National Park Service as a historic preservationist. His last assignment was to Fort Frederica National Monument, which brought him to the Georgia coast.
Wallace enjoyed many hobbies. He was a master woodworker who made wooden ducks, small furniture items and tobacco pipes. He loved antique cars and had a vast collection of mechanical clocks. Wallace especially enjoyed being outdoors. He loved flowers, fruit tree grafting, and was an active cyclist who enjoyed going on long trail rides. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Brunswick.
Wallace is survived by his wife of 35 years, Pamela; two daughters, Rhonda Strickland and Angela Barnes (David), six grandchildren, Grace Barnes, Elijah Barnes, Jesse Barnes, Jon Silas Barnes, Tanner Strickland and Brittany Wheat (Brandon) and two brothers, James Womble and Mike Womble.
