
Bill was born February 10, 1927, in Rossville, IL to Victor Jackson and Ruby Hichcock Jones Jackson. His father passed away when Bill was three and was raised by an uncle and aunt, Phil and Cecil Baragree.
He graduated from Rossville High School in 1945 as the valedictorian of his class. Bill joined the Army the day after graduation amd served until WWII ended. Upon his discharge as a T4 Sgt. he attended the University of Illinois. Farm duties and illness ended that chapter of life.
Bill was a rural letter carrier for 22 years before becoming postmaster at Rossville until retirement. He married Betty Hunley August 29th, 1948. She passed away unexpectedly June 11th, 2010.
Surviving are two daughters, Marjorie Bunting of Lafayette, IN. and Karen Cope (Boyd) of Brunswick, GA; two grandsons, Clinton Morgan of Rantoul, IL and Clayton Morgan of Indianapolis, IN; two granddaughters, Dr. Somer Johnson Lyons (Dan) of Washoe Valley, NV, and Natalie Mizelle (Daryle) of Brunswick, GA; and three great- grandchildren.
Bill and Betty retired in 1982 and spent every winter since then in their special places, Brunswick and Jekyll Island, Georgia.
Bill toured all 50 states. When he was 56 he rode a bicycle from Whidbey Island, WA, back to Rossville in 33 days. Bill had numerous interests and hobbies including dancing, hunting, playing bridge, golfing, running, wood working, playing the banjo, boomerang-throwing, anvil launching, and reading.
Bill was a life member of the American Legion, which he helped build back in the 50’s and had been a member of the Lion’s Club.
Graveside service with military honors will be held at a later date in Rossville Cemetery in Illinois.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home and Oglethorpe Crematorium.
