William "Bill" McNair, also fondly known as Herb or Sonny, peacefully departed from this world on June 2, 2025, at the age of 92. Surrounded by loved ones on Saint Simons Island, Georgia, Bill leaves behind a legacy of kindness, intelligence, and a profound appreciation for life.
Born on November 17, 1932, in Hawkinsville, Georgia, Bill’s life was a testament to adventure and service. A proud military fighter pilot, he soared the skies in the iconic F100 Super Sabre. After serving his country with distinction, Bill transitioned to a career in aerospace, retiring from Lockheed Martin, where his expertise and passion for aviation were greatly admired.
His adventurous spirit extended beyond his professional achievements. He was passionate about recreational flying, sailing, cycling, adventure travel, and was a classical music enthusiast. These passions he shared with friends and family throughout his life.
An active community member, Bill devoted time volunteering with MAP International and Keep Glynn Beautiful, striving to make a difference in the lives of those nearby and around the world. His commitment to service and community was as steadfast as his love for his family.
Bill's legacy lives on through his beloved wife, Wendy, of almost 50 years, and his son Russell (Leah) and grand-daughters Lily and Star, and Brian (Beth), and David (Lisa) and grand-daughter Flannery, and his daughter, Kathy, all of whom remember him as a loving father and husband who inspired them with his kindness and strength.
While cancer claimed Bill's earthly presence, his spirit soars freely among the clouds he loved so dearly during his life. A military burial will honor his service and lifelong dedication to his country; the details will be communicated to family and friends soon.
In honor of Bill's life, those wishing to celebrate his memory are encouraged to make a donation to Hospice of the Golden Isles or participate in environmental beautification efforts. Bill’s most incredible thrill wasn't just in his own adventures, but in fostering a world of exploration and kindness for future generations.
