Captain W.A. Hamby, Jr., age 69, of St. Simons Island, died Friday, January 28, 2011 at Hospice of the Golden Isles. Mr. Hamby was a native of St. Simons Island. He was a member of the Boilermakers local 26 and the boat captain for Neal Pope on the Sterling II. He was preceded in death by his father, Willis Alvin Hamby, Sr., his mother, Betty Grace Hamby, his sisters, Betty Hamby Lusher and Vera Hamby Warner, and a nephew, Alvin Lusher.
He is survived by two sons, David and Daniel Hamby of St. Simons Island; a sister, Carol Hamby Heffernan (Robert) of Duntroon Ontario, Canada; four nieces, Grace Wraggs, Paula Lusher, Gayle Eckerd and Tyra Hilliard; two nephews, Martin Warner and Todd Gunnell; and a friend, Nancy Lawman of Tampa.
A graveside memorial service will be held Saturday, February 5 at 12:00 pm at Oglethorpe Memorial Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Jamie Pearson, Brian Smith, Teddy Elrod, Jeff Stokes, Doc Jones and Michael Lay. At W.A.’s request, he will be cremated.
