

Winifred Hunter Capps, 77, died peacefully April 28, 2011 at Fairhaven Assisted Living. Ms. Capps was born June 10, 1933 in Baxley, Georgia to Lotus Sumner Hunter and Andrew Hunter. She graduated from Glynn Academy in 1951, and was the first female drum major for the Glynn Academy marching band. She loved getting together with her classmates for annual Class of 51 reunions, and she was outgoing, had a big heart, and enjoyed helping people.
She spent 30+ years working as a dental hygienist, and then went to her second career in real estate for another25 years. She was a top producer, winning many awards including being one of the first recipients of the Oglethorpe Award, Dartee Gaynor Award, Million Dollar Club Award, obtained several designations in her field and served as president of the Women’s Council of Realtors. She co-owned Century 21 Capps Realty with her daughter, Chandra until they sold it in 1999. Her passion was helping first time homebuyers purchase their first home.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Chandler H. Capps, Jr., and step-son, Steve Randolph Capps.
Ms. Capps is survived by a Brother, John T. “Tommy” Hunter (Lawana)of Brunswick, three daughters, Andrea Cotney Kennison (David) of Naples, Fla., Anita Cotney Jones of Brunswick, Chandra Capps (Steve Kendall) of St. Simons Island, a step-son David Capps (Carolyn) of Fernandina Beach, Fla., a step-daughter, Pam Capps Allred (Jim) of Interlachen, Fla., seven grandchildren, Beth Sellers Holt of St. Augustine, FLa., Shelby Jones Miller of Portland, Oreg., Amber Evans Fiveash and Paul Manning, both of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Marie Robertson Yancey of Claxton, Jason Smith of St. Simons Island, Bryan Thompson of St. Simons Island, 9 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends Sunday May 1, 2011 from 4 PM until 6 PM. at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home.
Memorial services will be held Monday May, 2, 2011 at 11 AM. at Northside Baptist Church in Brunswick, with Reverend Darrell Joiner officiating.
Honorary pallbearers will be the members of Northside Baptist Church Grace Sunday School class.
Inurnment will be private at Georgia Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Glennville.
