Cayetana (Tanie) Hsu passed away peacefully and lovingly surrounded by her family on Friday, January 23rd, 2026 at the age of 84. She was born in the beautiful coastal region of Sanchez Mira, Cagayan, Philippines. She leaves to join her beloved husband Hua, who passed away just 5 months ago, after 55 years of marriage. She was an adoring mother to their 3 children, Albert (Janet), David, and Jeanne (Alfred), and a proud grandmother to their 5 grandchildren, Connor (Anica), Mia, Jacob, Megan and Lauren. Tanie was predeceased by her parents, Francisco and Amparo Lim, and her brother Anastacio, and sisters Joven and Nelly. She is lovingly remembered by her siblings Feliza, Salvacion, Eddie, and Quintin, and their extended families.
From an early age, Tanie excelled academically, and then immigrated to Canada from the Philippines in 1968 to pursue a career in Food Science. She graduated from the University of Alberta earning a Masters degree in Food Microbiology, and it was there that she met the love of her life, Hua, while they were both graduate students. She established a distinguished career as a lab technologist, both in the federal government ensuring food safety, and at the University of Alberta, as a lab coordinator in the Department of Biological Sciences. The friendships she built with her colleagues were very important to her and thrived throughout her career.
Tanie was blessed with many gifts and talents. She was an eloquent writer and speaker, as was evident in her words of love and encouragement she freely shared with her family, whether through private conversations, wedding speeches, or in her tender messages written to loved ones in cards and letters. Tanie also had a passion for sewing and tailoring, as she loved to make many fun and creative costumes and dresses for her children and grandchildren throughout their childhoods. Her love of music and the arts have also lived on in the hearts of her children and grandchildren. Tanie was also an avid gardener, finding tranquility in tending to her garden and harvesting berries to make delicious jams to share with her loved ones. The beautiful rose garden she created at her home had even earned recognition in Edmonton’s annual Front Yards in Bloom program.
Tanie will be remembered for her kind, gentle spirit, and her hospitality. She was always accepting of everyone, and willing to strike up a conversation with anyone she met. She also had a unique ability to touch your heart with her smile, welcoming nature, and sense of humour. Above all, she had a deep faith that sustained her throughout the joys and challenges of her life, as she trusted in her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
We would like to express our gratitude to the medical staff in the emergency department and Unit 42 at the Foothills Hospital for the immense kindness and compassion they showed to Tanie and our family while caring for her and walking alongside us through her final days here on earth.
Those wishing to pay their respects may do so during a visitation on Tuesday, January 27th from 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm at Foster’s Garden Chapel (3220 4th Street NW).
