Dan was born in China to Cheung Tong and Hum Yet Sue. At the age of 12, he, his mom and younger brother moved to Montreal, Canada to join his father while his 2 older brothers had to stay behind. He was a proud big brother to his younger brother and two sisters who loved him dearly for his guidance and dry sense of humour. He went to McGill University where he graduated with a Chemical Engineering Degree and went on to work for Gulf Canada and then Petro-Canada.
When he met Shirley Tam, he immediately fell in love with her and they married in 1967. They created a warm and welcoming home and frequently hosted large family gatherings and family members who needed a place to stay. Dan is remembered fondly by extended family for his kindness, patience and good humour.
Dan and Shirley raised two daughters, Sandra and Linda, while living in Montreal, Mississauga, and then Calgary. Dan was a devoted family man and he loved nothing more than spending time with his family. He was proud to watch both his daughters graduate from university, marry and raise their own families. He especially treasured playing with his grandchildren and hearing about their latest adventures.
He will be greatly missed by his wife of 56 years, Shirley; daughters Sandra (Glen Mah) and Linda (Kevin Tang); grandchildren Amanda, Andrew, Lauren, and Christopher; siblings Paul (Yvette), Patricia (Van), and Carol; the Tam extended family and many nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Service will be held at Foster’s Garden Chapel, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 at 2:00 pm.
Interment to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
