It's been nearly 10 years since Darwin passed away, but I often think of him and his wife Joan and the Bicycle Adventure I was leading when he passed away.  In the few days I spent with Darwin, I found him to be a very warm-hearted, kind, and humorous man. It was the saddest day of my tour guiding career to lose him on Orcas Island, and I know my sadness was most certainly eclipsed by Joan and the entire Rounding family at so suddenly losing such a good and wonderful person. 

I stayed in touch with Joan for several years by e-mail but I seem to have misplaced her e-mail address.  I would love to touch base with her to see how she and her family are doing now. My e-mail is scott@walkingadventures.com and if Joan feels like reaching out, I would love to hear from her.

I was deeply saddened to read about Darwin's passing.  We worked together for several years, and I always enjoyed every moment of his company.  He had that special twinkle in his eye when he got a great idea (which was often) and I couldn't wait to hear what he was going to say. Darwin was a wise man who was loved by many and will be missed by all. My sincere condolences and prayers are with you all.

Well everyone, now the healing begins.  I've never had the pleasure of having family live anywhere near me, and I've known you all for nearly 20 years now.  You are my family, and I will miss "Uncle" Darwin dearly.

We are deeply saddened by your family's loss.  Darwin was an amazing man and we will miss his great sense of humor and love for life.  We have had many laughs each time Grandpa Bob told us the latest crazy life story of Darwin.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you.  We will be ringing our bicycle bells for him on our trails!

Joan, I was at the celebration of Darwin's life today, but did not have the opportunity to speak with you. Please accept our sincerest condolences. I knew Darwin from the day he arrived at Shell and the tributes offered today by Michael and Philip brought back many good memories of our years at work. Foremost, Darwin was a people person. He was always a joy to be around. May you and your sons and their families be comforted by the good and full life he shared with you. We recently heard about Darwin’s unfortunate death.  We were deeply saddened at this news, as I know that it must be very difficult for you.  Our sincere thoughts and prayers are with you.
Throughout the years, we've had the chance to get to know Darwin quite well … as a boss, a co-worker and as a friend.  We have always valued his friendship, kindness and thoughtfulness. Full of life, infectious smile and laugh... even now, thinking of Darwin, I can't help but smile. He's the kind of guy that filled people with happiness. Margareta and I are shocked over the sad news about Darwin. With his honesty and straight forwardness Darwin was a steady rock to lean on all through our working life. As friends we shared many a laugh together and that is how he will always remain in our minds. Dear Joan,

It is with much sadness that we heard about your loss of Darwin.  Although time and distance have separated us from maintaining the close a relationship that I know we would have enjoyed, the impact of Darwin’s passing is deeply felt.  Darwin was a great guy because of his honesty, his ethics and his open enjoyment of people.  Those attributes are why Darwin was one of my best friends from our university days and why Pam and I were honoured to have him in our wedding party back in 1969.   

We were only able to see each other a few times over the years since you moved west and we both became occupied with careers and growing families.  But on those occasions it was always a treat to meet, to laugh and to catch up with the important things happening in our lives.  But also, in those get-togethers it was so evident how important Darwin’s family was to him above all else.  He was immensely proud of his sons and their accomplishments.  He would talk in detail and with great interest about everything that they were doing.  And Joan, from the time he first introduced you to Pam and I, we could see that you were his perfect match, and how you so enjoyed each others company.  Over the years, we were amazed to see that together you took up so many new interests in things that seemed so un-Darwin-like to us.  Such activities like skiing, mountain biking and traveling the world.  

One of Darwin’s great attributes was his sense of humour and the fun he had with people. He got a great kick out of other peoples’ quirks and foibles and loved them all the better for their differences.  I think that is why Darwin was such a joy to spend time with, and what made him a good and respected friend to so many.  As we saw in the notice you placed in the newspaper for him, you listed ‘comedian’ first among other characteristics.  That ability to make others laugh will be remembered and missed by many.

It is so very sad to know that Darwin has been lost to us all.  But for you and the boys, their wives and your grandson, for his Mom and his sister and family, you were fortunate enough to have known and shared your lives with someone as enjoyable, as responsible and as caring as Darwin Rounding.  That is a blessing you will always share. Darwin was truly one of the good guys.

Although I haven't had the opportunity to speak to Darwin in years I can fondly remember his wit and dry humor as a teenager when he attended Essex High School.

It is sad to learn that we will no longer be able to enjoy being in Darwin's enthusiastic company.  I have known Dar for so many years; enjoyed his friendship from early days in University with our engineering classmates where we fit so many good times into four years,  and then onward through to current times.  Whenever we got together in recent years , it was wonderful to see that he never lost  any of that  same spirit.  He kept the same wonderful sense of humour, always curious about his friend's lives, and usually regaling us about the many old friends that he somehow seemed to keep in contact with.  In retirement he just kept pursuing and enjoying his many outdoors activities and his expanding family, with even more enthusiasm. We will miss Dar -  he was a such a sincere and generous friend.
