

David Nelson passed away at the Peter Lougheed Centre on August 5, 2010 aged 90 years. He was born at the Scottish Nursing Home in Calgary and went home with his parents David and Erna to the Western Stock Ranch at Cluny. His family moved to the Nelson farm in 1922. He grew up on the farm and rode over the hill to school in Cluny with his brother Allan and Bill and Elizabeth Chase. David married Ruth Rogers from Chancellor in 1942 and they farmed on the Blackfoot Reserve at Shouldice, moving to the Cluny farm in 1949. They subsequently divorced and David married Jean Elliot in 1952. They continued to farm at Cluny until 1972, and then retired to Vancouver Island, returning to Calgary in 2005. David was predeceased by his wife Jean in 2007. He is survived by his sons David (Virginia) Nelson and Rod (Carol) Nelson; Grandchildren Katherine (Brent) Murray, Carol (Roy) Cottle, Donna (Shane) Playfair, Traci (Scott) Fischer, Michael (Haley) Nelson; as well as eleven great-grandchildren, Kristen and Darren Murray, Sarah and Matthew Cottle, Samantha and Mark Playfair and Ashley Berg, Sinclaire and Lyndon Fischer, Jonathan and Meagen Nelson. He will be dearly missed by his brother Allan (Margaret) Nelson and family of Edmonton. We wish to thank Dr. Daly of Clinic 1 of the Peter Lougheed Centre for his care and kindness and for being so forthright and helpful. Thank you to the doctors and staff of Clinic 1 for your care and kindness. The ladies in the “Treatment Room” were wonderful. We also wish to thank the nursing staff of Unit 38 for being so kind. In Lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in David’s memory directly to the Canadian Cancer Society, Calgary and District Unit Office, Second Floor, 215 – 12 Ave. SE Calgary, Alberta T2G 1A2. A Memorial Reception will be held at SOUTH CALGARY FUNERAL CENTRE, 12700 Macleod Trail South, (at Lake Fraser Gate) Calgary on Friday, August 13, 2010 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. A private family interment was held at Union Cemetery.
