She was born on September 17, 1940 in Calcutta, India and was the eldest of three independently minded daughters.
As a youth she demonstrated a rebellious spirit by playing with the local children and being scolded for it, learning to fix cars and learning to drive in a manual jeep. Things a young girl was not to do. This pattern would continue as the years passed. Her adventures began when the family left India in the late 1950’s, with a brief stop in England, and then finally arrived in Canada settling in Taber, Alberta. After arriving in Canada she embarked on a lifelong journey of learning. As life threw obstacles in her path she adjusted her direction, learned new skills, and pressed forward. From secretarial, to physical therapy, and then eventually to a wider ‘out there’ collection of healing skills. She applied the same zeal to her ability to take whatever was at hand and turn it into a meal. Whether it was a full kitchen or a single frying pan in a hotel room, there was always an interesting meal to be served.
Dawn had a love of gardening and an eye for varieties, colours, and placement along with a sensitivity of knowing where the plant would best like to be. Continuing with her undaunted approach to life she once declared “I’m going to grow grapes” and sure enough with her nurturing the garden expanded to productive grape vines.
She is survived by her son Brian and wife Karan, granddaughter Taylor, sisters Didi and Annette. And more importantly she continues on in the memory of experiences and adventures that she created and shared with her family, colleagues, friends & neighbors, and her eclectic ‘out there’ communities.
A Celebration of Dawn's Life will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at 2:00 PM.
