March 15, 1918 – August 7, 2011
On Sunday August 7, 2011, Donald Fredrick MacKinnon passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the Colonel Belcher in Calgary at the age 93 years. Don was born in Coleman, Alberta on March 15. Don’s family and friends enjoyed his quick wit, sense of fun, and loyalty. He had an amazing ability to connect with people. Don will always be remembered by his family as their biggest “cheerleader”. Don was proud of his years of work as an engineer in the Coal Branch and the oil fields with Texaco Exploration, and the many friendships it brought to his family. But most of all he was proud of his loving family. After sixty-five years of marriage, wife Ruth will feel Don’s absence. He is survived by his sister Melba Smith and predeceased by his brother Archibald. He will be deeply missed by his two daughters and sons-in-law Joan and Jon Loomis and Barbara MacKinnon and Boyd McBride. His grandchildren Jeff and Anna Loomis and Luke and Beth McBride will always remember his interest in and consistent support of their lives. His great grandchildren Solomon and Marion Loomis provided him great joy in his last years of life. A Memorial Service was held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary on Friday August 12, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to the Friends of the Colonel Belcher c/o Calgary Health Trust 800, 11012 Macleod Trail SE Calgary, AB T2J 6A5.
