Dorothy Gates was born in Saskatoon, the second of four children to Adolphus Hicks and Charlotte (Bilkey) Hicks. She is survived by her daughter, Eileen (John) Curda; two grandchildren, Cheryl (Todd) Sceviour and Scott Curda as well as two great grandchildren, Ryan and Tyler Sceviour. She was predeceased by her husband, Jack Gates; sisters, Gladys Kullman and Winifred Hood and brother, Dennis Hicks. Dorothy and Jack lived in Saskatoon until 1977 when they moved to Calgary to be closer to their daughter and grandchildren. In Saskatoon, Jack and Dorothy were very proud of their garden, winning many awards for their flowers and vegetables. She loved her sports and was very proud of her daughter, her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a competitive card player, especially Canasta. She also learned to complete Sudoku puzzles at the age of 92 years. Although her body may have failed her in her later life, her mind was always sharp.
At Dorothy’s request there will be a private graveside service for family and close friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. Thank you to the nursing staff at Wentworth Manor and also to Rockyview General Hospital staff for their care and compassion during her short stay. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website www.fostersgardenchapel.ca.
