With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of our father, grandfather, and great grandfather, Earl Schwindt. Earl passed away peacefully on Friday, July 11, 2025, at the age of 93 years in Virden, Manitoba.
Earl was born in Saskatchewan but spent his formative years in Oak Lake, Manitoba. He was the seventh child born into a family of ten.
At the age of 21, Earl travelled to Regina, Saskatchewan to train for the RCMP and served from 1951 to 1954 in Whitehorse, Yukon. After being in a terrible car accident, he met a nurse, Shirley, while he was in the hospital. They were married in 1957. Together they bought the house on Windermere Road and raised four children. He joined the Calgary Fire Department in 1956 and retired as a District Chief in 1991.
After Shirley’s passing in 1999, he reconnected with an old flame from his childhood, Phyllis Weatherald and they were married in July 2007. After some health issues, they moved back to Oak Lake, in 2016.
Earl was predeceased by his parents, six of his ten siblings, his first wife Shirley, his second wife Phyllis and his daughter Maureen. He is survived by his children, Ken (Gerri), Wendy (Kevin), Terry, and Maureen’s spouse Jeff. He is also survived by grandchildren Patrick (Amanda), Tyler (Holly), Emily, Christian, Keith and Claire. He is also a great grandad to Emery and Owen. Earl is remembered by his siblings Inez, Esther and Clifford and a large extended family.
The family wishes to thank the caring staff at the Sherwood and Westman Care Homes in Virden, and the kind support of family and friends, especially in Oak Lake.
A Memorial Service will be held at Foster’s Garden Chapel, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. For those that wish to attend Earl's Memorial Service virtually, please use the link below.
