April 15, 1935 – May 27, 2016
As a proud native Calgarian, Ed passed away on Friday, May 27, 2016 at the age of 81 years. He was the loving husband of Ann, beloved father of Scot, guiding hand for Scot and Becky (Reuser) and proud grandfather of Colton.
While a teenager, he worked as a guide for Andy Russell in Waterton National Park and developed a love of horses. He became interested in flying and had a brief career as a Flight Cadet in the RCAF. He attended PITA (SAIT) and began his long career as a surveyor upon graduation in 1958. In 1968 he became an Instructor at SAIT in the Drafting Department where he remained until his retirement in early 2000. He was a long time ALSA member as well as a member of APEGA.
Ed and Ann met in a Statistics class at the University of Calgary. They began their 45 years of married life in Fredericton, New Brunswick while he pursued his Masters in Surveying Engineering. Returning to Calgary, they had wonderful years as the loving parents of sons David (1974) and Scot (1976). Ed was extremely proud when they both became Engineers. Many happy summers were spent as a family at their cabin in Windermere. Once Ed and Ann finally retired, they wintered in Mesa, Arizona where he discovered new talents in woodcarving and oil painting. In Calgary, he could be found enjoying coffee with his many groups of friends at Northland Mall.
Ed lived life to the fullest, loved to make people laugh with his outrageous stories and despite recent declining health, appreciated every day he had.
He was predeceased by his parents Tracy and Mae Scovill and former wife Joan (Peddle) who died of cancer after only a year and a half together. The death of son David in May of 1999 was a heartbreaking event.
Ed is survived by his wife Ann, son and daughter-in-law Scot and Becky, grandson Colton, sister Maureen Kozak and family as well as the Meighen families in Manitoba. He will be well remembered for keeping us in smiles and laughter.
Thanks to the wonderful staff in emergency and Unit 112 at the Foothills Hospital for the care and compassion shown to all of us while he fought long and hard before giving up that last peaceful breath.
A Celebration of Life will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary, AB (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Friday, June 3, 2016 at 2:00 p.m.
