Esther Jane Hendricks passed away with her family by her side on Saturday, August 8, 2020, at the age of 67 years. She was a courageous, God fearing woman, but lost her short battle to Cancer. Now she can dance and walk, free of this worldly pain and affliction. She will be lovingly remembered by all those lives she touched. Mother, Victoria Funk, predeceased by her father, Edward Funk. Survived by her brother Richard Funk (Krisine); husband of her youth, Lev Tov Zohar; daughters Julia (Rosler) and Sarah (Sean Carter). Esther was also grandma to many, Joy and Katie-Lynn Watson (Sarah), Austin, Lukas and Gavin (Julia). Esther had many nieces and nephews, Aubrey Funk Sturko (Mike, Adara, Kaylee, Illyssa, Alden and Steven), Zack Funk (Chelesy and Bronson), Stacy Stewart (Tanner, Sadie and Genevieve) and Dallin Funk (McKinley).
Esther was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Victoria Oczkus Funk and Edward Wieb Funk. Tragically contracted Polio at a young age, but nothing would stop Esther. She survived that pandemic, carried on achieving her Bachelor of Education in 1974, at the University of Calgary. Esther fell in love with a military man, who soon became her husband. Nine months later they had their first daughter, Julia Beth. Two years later they welcomed their second daughter, Sarah Naomi to complete their family.
Esther had a heart of gold, always willing to help others and share her life story. She was a true daughter of Christ and loved to teach others. Esther was tenacious and outgoing with everything she did. You could always see her shine from a distance, with her sparkle and purple heart. Although teaching in the professional capacity was not pursued once her daughters were born, Esther was employed with Telus for 21 years. She made a lot of friends and felt she was making a difference by helping others.
One of the best memories her grandkids will have is taking a ride with her on the back of her power wheelchair and swimming at her downtown apartment pool.
At Esther’s request there will be a small celebration of life at South Calgary Funeral Centre and Crematorium. Due to Covid-19, we are not able to accommodate the thousands of people lives Esther touched, so we are streaming live on Facebook – South Calgary Funeral Centre & Crematorium: http://www.facebook.com/South-Calgary-Funeral-Centre-and-Crematorium-613083798839741
