Ethel was born on September 2, 1935 in Peterborough, Ontario to Ethel and James Roberts. She is predeceased by her first husband, Charles Short, father of her children, and her second husband, Douglas McLeod; her sister Jean Potter (George) and her brothers James (Louise) and Mel (Carol). She is survived by her sister Shirley Scott (Ted); her children, Carol Bloor (Donald), Edward Short (Sandra) and Charles Stewart Short (Linda); the children of Douglas, Karen and Scott; and by her eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Ethel had no middle name because her mother said she ran out of names. Raised on a farm on Alexander Avenue in Peterborough, Ethel recalled having two dresses: one clean for Sunday school and the week thereafter; the second in the laundry in preparation for next week. She left home to study history at the University of Toronto. The family moved on and the farm disappeared.
Ethel raised her three children in New Brunswick and began a career in social work in mid-life. She eventually started her own hobby farm in Pleasant Villa in the beautiful St. John River Valley. Besides her wonderful garden, Ethel loved all her musical endeavours, including teaching piano, music groups and playing the organ at church. A devout, moderate Christian, she held no belonging to material possessions, but was nevertheless enveloped in joy sitting before the piano that she had restored. In later years, Ethel participated more in the lives of her grandchildren, first in Ottawa and later in Calgary. For a time, she was an unlikely football fan.
Ethel said she was blessed to live in this part of the world through her period of history. She will be interred with Douglas in the Upper Hampstead Cemetery in New Brunswick.
A Memorial Service to celebrate the life of Ethel McLeod will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 12th, 2023 at Queenstown United Baptist Church, 4558 Route 102, Queenstown, NB. Pastor Eric Hudson presiding. A short, informal interment will take place immediately after at Upper Hampstead Cemetery, Upper Hampstead Rd.
