We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Ewan “Red” Ferrier on Thursday, May 25, 2023 at the Agape Hospice in Calgary, Alberta. He was the first of three children born to Margaret & Harry Ferrier. Ewan spent his formative years in the idyllic Glen Lethnot, Scotland amongst trout-filled streams, rolling hills, and sheep farms. He joined the military in 1952, serving with the Black Watch in Kenya and was on the Queens Guard at Balmoral Castle. This is where he met Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and danced with the Queen Mother. Upon his return to Scotland after his military service was complete, he received an honourable discharge and then joined the Aberdeen Constabulary. He met the love of his life, Eileen, while she was vacationing in Scotland and in 1959 he would move across the ocean to Canada to be with her; they were married in 1961. Ewan joined the Calgary Police Services as a constable in 1959 and would demonstrate exemplary service to our city for the following thirty years. He prided himself in the honour and integrity he brought to the job, supporting his fellow officers and never compromising his principles.
The love and comradery of those in public service can also be seen in Ewan’s many years of membership with Royal Canadian Legion Branch #285.
An avid sports enthusiast, he played golf in the summer and curling in the winter. Ewan was also a staple in the Calgary Archery scene as he was a skilled competitor, fair judge, and steady coach for both children and adults. Nothing gave him greater happiness than to see people succeed in their goals.
Ewan was also a talented musician, mastering the Bass, Tenor Drums, and the Bagpipes (which he taught himself to play). He performed in several pipe bands over the years including the Calgary Police Pipe Band and Calgary Highlanders and finally the Calgary and District Pipe Band.
He had multiple health issues in these last few years but he fought them with courage and humour. Ewan touched many lives during his 90 years and his presence, guidance, wisdom and sense of humour will be missed by all.
Ewan is survived by his wife of 61 years, Eileen; his children and their families, Sandy & Andrew Gorman, Ian & Roxanne Ferrier, Moira & Trevor Lewis and Eric & Amy Vorgaard; his grandchildren, Derek, Clare, Conor, Alex, Maggie, Rico, Liam, Hazel, and Morgan; his sisters and their families, Fiona Troop, and Moira & David Gracie.
“Always keep your sense of humour and don’t take yourself too seriously” – Ewan Ferrier
