Florence Evelyn Hamfelt passed away peacefully at home in her own bed, as she had wished, on Thursday, December 12th, 2013, at the age of 91 years. Florence is survived by son Norm (Meara) and their children Adrian (Vhari), Julia and Amelia; and son Ron (Michelle) and his children Michael (Christina) and Melissa (Patrick) and Michelle's daughter Megan. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Ann Holt, nieces Dale Holt, Debbie (Peter) Kruusi and nephew Doug (Laurie) Holt, Jr., and sisters-in-law Davina Holt and Aina Haild. Florence is predeceased by her beloved husband Norman Bertil Hamfelt, to whom she was married for almost sixty years.
Florence was born in Montreal, Quebec, to Thomas Hedger and Catherine Holt into a large family of ten siblings. She was especially close with her brother Doug and sister Ethel. It was her brother Doug who introduced her to Norman, as the two of them had become best friends during the war, and together with Doug's wife Ann, the two couples became inseparable life long friends who saw each other through the best and worst of times.
Family was always of paramount importance to Florence and throughout her life, she enjoyed close family ties and also had an active social life with many friends that she made within her community and church. While raising her young family in Verdun, she was an active member and president of Riverview School PTA, taught Sunday catechism classes at St. Jude's Anglican Church and worked diligently in her husband's printing business.
In 1967 she moved with her family to Toronto, where they lived and worked happily until their retirement in 1988. In 1990, Florence and Norman moved to Calgary with their son Norm and daughter-in-law Meara. Florence was always very happy to have the opportunity to be an active part of the daily lives of her three grandchildren Adrian, Julia and Amelia and to live in much closer proximity to her grandchildren Michael and Melissa, whom she also visited as often as possible.
She continued to be active in the community by joining the Midnapore Seniors Association, where she volunteered as the social events co-ordinator. Among the many new friends that she and Norm made here, Grant and Georgette Bruce and Harold and Shirley Breidon became especially close ones.
For the past ten years, since the passing of her husband Norman, Florence has led a quieter life, as she has faced an ongoing struggle with Alzheimer's Disease. She was compassionately cared for by many caregivers from WeCare and the family would like to thank them for their kindness to Florence.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Service at South Calgary Funeral Centre located at 12700 Macleod Trail South (at Lake Fraser Gate) on Tuesday, December 17th at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
