Freda Boag passed away peacefully at the Chinook Care Centre in Calgary on February 8, 2017 at the age of 105 years. Freda is lovingly remembered by her two grandchildren Lisa Boag-Guidi (Grant), and Ryan Boag (Autumn Malsbury); six great-grandchildren Shelby Guidi, Eireland Guidi, Garyn Guidi, Ayden Boag, Olivia Boag, and Emma Boag. She is also survived by her goddaughter and niece June Mitchell of Vernon; as well as many other extended great-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Henry in 1996, son Joe in 1981, and daughter-in-law Jan in 1996.
Freda was born in Edmonton in 1911 and remained there until 2016 when she moved to Calgary to be closer to her grandchildren. She was the youngest of eight children born to Phillip and Barbara Metz. She recalled being the first on her block to have power, running water, indoor plumbing, and a car. It was a busy household but one she recalled with fondness. On Saturday mornings the children were sent to classes to learn to speak their parents’ native German language. Having completed training to be a talented seamstress by grade nine, she quickly left school and went to work in the furrier business. Her creativity also extended to other projects such as refinishing upholstered furniture, embroidery, and quilting. Her garden was her pride and joy and she spend many hours tending to it. She also enjoyed experimenting with her cooking. In later years, the cooking was at times based on the travelling that she was doing with her travel club, or preparing new dishes for her swim group gatherings. Freda was ahead of the times, always thinking about her health and natural means by which to sustain it. Despite her work and interests, her focus was always on taking care of the home as well as her husband, Henry, and only son Joe. She shared a closeness with her sisters with whom she spent much time. Family recall the entertaining she enjoyed doing with them. In the last year of Freda’s life, she had the opportunity to move to Calgary where she enjoyed visiting with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and telling them about her life. This time will be forever cherished!
As per Freda’s wishes, there will not be a service.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations being made in Freda’s memory directly to the Canadian Cancer Society, (#200, 325 Manning Rd NE, Calgary, AB T2E 2P5).
