He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Sandra (Randy) and his son, Brian (Susan), his grandchildren Sarah (Kareem), Greg (Joyce), Michael (Kristin) and Alex.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of 57 years, Shirley, his parents, Frank and Greta and sister, Lois.
He is also survived by, and will be missed by, his second wife, Bertha.
Fred was born in Calgary but grew up in Bowden, AB. After high school and a year at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, he started working in landscape sales for Alberta Nurseries with his father. He met Shirley during this time and settled in Calgary to work and raise his family. He worked at Irving Industries for close to 30 years and retired as their VP of Marketing. He was always involved with community service and volunteering, serving time as President of the Calgary Southwest Kiwanis Club, and a volunteer for 30 years with the Calgary Stampede, chairing both the Volunteer Placement and Personnel Committee and the Lotteries Committee for 5 and 3 years respectively. Fred was an Associate Director and was honoured as a Stampede Volunteer Life Member because of his dedication to the organization.
Fred was an avid sports fan, whether it was coming out to watch his grandchildren play baseball, soccer, hockey and basketball, or cheering on the Stampeders and Flames, maintaining season tickets to both for as long as his family can remember. As well, he and Shirley enjoyed many years playing golf together at Willow Park GCC.
No matter where he went, Dad made friends and loved to socialize. He was so proud of his family and made sure everyone knew that. Being able to watch his granddaughter and grandsons grow up and experience success and happiness in their lives brought him great joy. He appreciated the people in his life and all that life had to offer and taught us what it truly means to be grateful.
A private family graveside service will be held on Friday, September 17, 2021.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Fred’s name may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada at https://alzheimer.ca/en/take-action/donate, or charity of your choice.
The family extends their sincere gratitude to the staff at Southwood Care Centre, Willow Park, for their outstanding care and compassion over the last four years.
