Gene was born in Wichita Falls, Texas. He lived in various places in the USA and took a job offer in Calgary in 1980. Gene was the Executive Director of In-Definite Arts Society (now called the National Access Arts Centre) for 22 years. He was very passionate about working with persons with disabilities. Gene was a licensed private pilot in the USA and was also a licensed Methodist Minister.
At age 92, he had outlived his family including his wife; June and his only child; Walter. Walter Neel (63 years old) passed away in February 2022. Gene’s parents were Walter and Loulene Neel and his younger brothers were Ronald and Mike. His beloved sister-in-law, Marsha Neel (married to Mike) was like a sister and he was very fond of her. Marsha is in USA and is caring for her mother.
Gene leaves behind his special friend, Tom, whom he had known for over 15 years.
A celebration of Gene’s life will be held on Wednesday May 7, 2025 at 11:00 am at the South Calgary Funeral Centre & Crematorium (12700 Macleod Trail, Calgary, Alberta).
Gene donated to homeless shelters annually. We know he would appreciate it if, in lieu of flowers, you may care to make a donation to a local homeless shelter of your choice in his memory.
