The Slater family is heartbroken to announce the passing of George Stephen Samchuck Jr. We lost Geo on October 6, 2024 at Foothills Hospital, Calgary, Alberta from complications after surgery. Left to mourn are beloved sister Marcia (Samchuck) & brother-in-law Dennis, adored nephew Stephen “Alec” and his partner Robyn Jory.
Geo will be remembered so fondly for his playfulness with English, love of puns, appreciation of casino buffets, intelligence, musical talent, science and his passion for world affairs and ancient history. We had such fun!
A true child of Alberta, Geo was born in Red Deer when his parents Jean & George were on their way to Calgary. The family always lived in northwest Calgary, except a few years in the United States After their return they settled in Parkdale, Geo graduating from Queen Elizabeth High School in Hillhurst.
He began as a music major at U. of C. but turned to the seismic industry, working with his dad throughout North America and eventually in the Middle East and North Africa. He especially came to love the landscape and culture of the Four Corners area of the U.S. He had a keen interest in Calgary history (especially the northwest) and loved Alberta’s rolling hills & the big sky of the Canadian prairies. When other peers had retired, Geo turned to security services, working at many sites around Calgary.
A classically-trained pianist, Geo came to love many different genres including blues, country and the rock music of his generation. He took in concerts of many of the biggest names in modern music such as The Eagles, Meat Loaf and Sting.
His family admired him so much for his 40 years of sobriety and his support and mentorship of others. His best friends Mike Parkinson, Sherry Cousins, Sherry Fedor, Sheri Fulford and the Parkinson family will him miss greatly, as will his many, many friends and co-workers.
Huge thanks to surgical and ICU staff at the Foothills Hospital for their care of Geo and kindness to the family. If desired, friends are encouraged to donate to Women In Need Society at their website https://www.winsyyc.ca/ or Simon House Recovery Centre at their website https://www.simonhouse.com in lieu of flowers in Geo’s name.
