Gordon Wong passed away on Wednesday, May 11th at the age of 70 years. Gordon was born in September of 1951 to Yvonne Pui Ching Wong and Frank Doi Hey Wong in China. He was their second child and oldest son. At an early age Gordon contracted a very high fever and it left him handicapped needing care throughout his life. Although the high fever affected his speech and limited use of one his arms Gordon had an excellent mind and physically quite active. He grew up in Hong Kong and went to school like other teens. He enjoyed the movies and modern English music of the 60’s. He was really quite hip. In 1969, he and Louise joined the rest of the family in Canada. While in Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan, he was an active worker in the family restaurant. Nightly, Gordon would refill the pop machine and clean and mop the dining room while listening to all the cool tunes from the Jukebox. His best memories were of playing tag football with Albert, Allen and Mary in the alley at the back of the restaurant. Gordon was an extremely gifted athlete he could kick the football further than anyone of us. And if he caught the pass it was instant touchdown. Gordon loved life and lived it to the fullest, he enjoyed all his favorite foods and like to tinker with electronics taking apart radios and stereo equipment. In the 1974 the Wong family moved to Calgary and settled in Marlborough, Gordon continued to help out gardening and mowing the lawn with Frank and Yvonne. During this period he played chess and was a champion at “Stock Ticker” a stock market game. He was great at both. Gordon was a generous soul he would share and often gave gifts to new people he met. He was a good brother to us all. I don t recall him being unhappy for too long and ever smiling. This infectious positive attitude won him many friends with the workers and staff at Wing Kei where he retired with Mom Yvonne in around 2011. They both kept each other company and were happy there. Winning at bingo, making crafts, joking with the staff, Gordon was a delightful resident. Gordon passed peacefully in his sleep on May 11 and will be deeply missed.
Sleep peacefully Gordon as you join Mom and Dad in heaven and may we meet again someday to complete our family reunion.
He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his siblings and their families, Louise Dang, Marjorie Cheng, Dorothy Chau, Albert Wong, Mary Wong, and Allen Wong; his nieces and nephews, Kim Dang, Tanya Dang, Derek Dang Alena Cheng, Daniel Cheng, Sabrina Wong and Anthony Wong
A Celebration of Gordon’s Life will be held on Tuesday, May 24th at 2:00pm at Foster’s Garden Chapel Funeral Home (3220 4TH Street NW, Calgary, AB) with interment to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the team at the Wing Kei Care Centre for the loving care they provided to Gordon.
