He was born and raised in Alix, Alberta being the oldest child of Harry and Alice Simmons. After graduating high school he began a 35 year career with the Alberta Treasury Branch. This took him to many locations in Alberta where he met Eileen Torgerson whom he married in 1957. They enjoyed 54 years of marriage, raising two children as well as enjoying a full life of travel to parts of Europe, North and South America, and Mexico. In their early retirement Eileen and Maurice took up back-packing and hiking the Canadian Rockies and RV “snow birding” down to the USA.
When Eileen passed away in 2011, Maurice enjoyed gardening, photography, painting, reading, wood working and involvement in the church. His love of travel continued with trips to Mexico, a cross Atlantic cruise to the Mediterranean and numerous trips to the west coast of Canada. He was fortunate to find love and companionship a second time when he married his wife Lois in 2015. They enjoyed a river boat cruise in Europe, trips to Los Angeles and Vancouver Island before deteriorating health made air travel no longer possible. However, they enjoyed their place at Gleniffer Lake, Alberta for a few more years.
Maurice is dearly missed by his wife Lois, his son David (Leanne) Simmons and his daughter Sheila (Ken) McKeating. He is also survived by sister-in-law Gladys Botnen and many nephews, nieces and cousins in Canada, USA and England.
Maurice was predeceased by his parents Harry and Alice; wife Eileen, brother Bob Simmons, sister Pat McCord, sister-in-law Alice Simmons; brothers-in-law Alton McCord and Ivar Botnen; niece Linda Botnen and great nephew Michael Giesbrecht.
