WONG, Janet King Chun, passed away peacefully surrounded by her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren at the Foothills Medical Center in the early morning hours of Sunday, the 5th of February 2023 at the age of 91 years.
Born in Toisan, China, she moved to Hong Kong at the age of 18 after marrying her husband Harry; they had five beautiful children. In August of 1968, Joe and Betty Leong, her loving brother and sister-in-law, sponsored all seven members of her family including Harry’s mother to Canada to begin their new life. Without Joe and Betty’s support, Janet and her family would not have had the life they have today - Janet and her family will be forever grateful for this.
Though there were tough times and hardships, Janet’s resiliency allowed her to live a full, vibrant, and beautiful life surrounded by her abundant immediate and extended family from around the world. She was truly a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to all who knew her. Stubborn, selfless, and fiercely independent, she enjoyed frequent walks along the Bow River and Calgary area, hiking Banff trails, traveling the world with her children, tending to her beautifully manicured gardens, lunch outings, and joyful dinner parties with her family. After retiring, she took on the job of taking care of her numerous grandchildren. Even in her golden years, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren kept her young, smiling, and active.
Janet is survived by her loving husband of 74 years, Harry, and their five children Brenda (Simon), Kelly (Tiffany), Suzanne, Terry (Marianne), and Cheryl (Tony).
She will also be lovingly remembered by her ten grandchildren: Anita (Stan), Stephen (Annie), Rebecca (Norman), Jessica (Mike), Jennifer (Phil), Nicole (Eugene), Cory (Corrine), Matthew, Jasmine, Christopher, and her exceptional fourteen great-grandchildren.
Janet is also survived by her beloved brother and sister-in-law: Joe and Betty Leong of Calgary, her brother John Mah of Vancouver, her numerous nieces and nephews in Vancouver, Seattle, and Los Angeles, along with her cherished cousin and their family in Toronto.
Predeceased by her eldest sister in Hong Kong, her elder sister in Seattle, and her elder brother, along with her two loving nephews in Nanaimo.
In lieu of all flower arrangements, a memorial contribution may be made directly to the family.
Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at a Visitation held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Sunday, February 12, 2023 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm.
