Jean Douglas Smith

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Jean Douglas Smith, age 92, on Friday, August 30, 2024. Jean was a beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend who lived a full and vibrant life. Jean was born and raised in Cupar, Scotland, where she cherished her youth and early adulthood. After completing her nursing degree in Glasgow and starting her career, her life took a new direction while travelling in Canada when she met the love of her life, Robert Smith, with whom she settled with in Vancouver and later relocated to Ottawa, Canada. Together, they built a beautiful life, raising their two sons, Doug and Drew, and immersing themselves in the community. Jean and Robert were devoted parents, and their home was always filled with love, laughter, and the bustle of their boys’ active lives.

In their golden years, Jean and Robert relocated to the beautiful Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario where they created a close-knit golfing community, formed lifelong friendships, and enjoyed the serenity of their surroundings.

After Robert's passing in 2011, Jean sought the comfort of family and moved to Calgary in 2015. There, she spent her remaining years surrounded by loved ones, especially enjoying the company of her son Drew and his wife Dawn. Jean was a cherished member of her community, making new friends and creating lasting memories even in her later years.

Originally from Scotland, Jean cherished the time spent with her family from back home. Their visits, vacations and chats were always a highlight, bringing her joy and comfort. Her warmth and love for her Scottish roots will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.

Jean is predeceased by her husband (Robert), mom (Jean), dad (Andrew), sister Dorothy (Dal), sister- in-law Pat, brother-in-law George and survived by her loving sons Doug and Drew (Dawn); her brother Douglas; sisters Janet, Pat (Richard) and Brenda (Alan), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Jean’s legacy is one of love, resilience, and community. She touched the lives of all who knew her and will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

A Celebration of Jean’s Life will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary, Alberta (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Thursday, September 12, 2024 at 10:00 a.m MST.
