James Morgan Weston was born to Peter and Margo Weston on May 8, 1959, at the Grace Hospital in Calgary, Alberta. Jim sadly passed away suddenly. Jim is survived by brother Mike (Maria) Weston, sister Kathy (Steve) Barkey, nephews Kyle (Brit) Barkey, Brad (Jamie) Barkey, and great-niece Charlotte.
Jim grew up in Alberta - Spirit River and Calgary. He attended school in Calgary and graduated with matriculation from John G. Diefenbaker in the first full term graduation 1977. He was a talented hockey player and received a scholarship to North Dakota University. Disappointingly, a knee injury brought him home early. Upon his return home, he and his longtime friend, Cliff Kitely, started a “Fastball” courier company that served them well for several years.
Our Dad introduced us to sailing and through that experience, Jim discovered a real love of the Caribbean ocean. Jim and another life long friend, Kevin Booth, ventured there with the idea of opening an internet cafe. Unfortunately, after 3 years of living in Tortola, political issues brought him home.
Not too long after his return to Calgary, he and his friends Kevin Booth and Hal Metcalf opened a Yuk Yuks at the Elbow River Casino. Yuk Yuks was a source of pleasure and pride for Jim. As friends and family we were all able to enjoy some evenings there - often the drinks were on Jim.
Jim also loved the horse races, as did his friends. Some would be seen skipping school to go bet on the horses. He became quite an aficionado, well versed in the owners, trainers, and jockeys. He attended many major events with Kevin and Hal.
Traveling and golfing were also a large part of Jim’s life. His friends were his chosen family and he spent so much of his life with them. He was a fun spirit and laughed a lot. The Green Bay Packers were his football team and he was able to get to a game. He was the proud owner of one share of the team.
There is much to say about Jim and how our family relationship grew after our Dad’s passing. He took on the role of Dad to look after his little sister. My family and I are blessed to know how much he loved us. We will miss him dearly.
A Celebration of Jim’s Life will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary, Alberta (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Saturday, September 7, 2024 at 2:00 p.m.
