Joan passed away peacefully on Monday July 10, 2017, three days before her 87th birthday at Chinook Hospice in Calgary, AB. She will be deeply missed by her husband Stephen George Sorokan; her two loving sons Todd Sorokan (Louise) of North Vancouver, BC, and Tyler Sorokan (Ang) of Midhurst, ON; and her five grandchildren Sydney, Teagan, Cole, Lawson, and Riley Sorokan, whom she loved very much. She was very close with all of her relatives in Ontario and Alberta.
Joan graduated from the University of Toronto in 1952 with a degree in Physical Education and taught in Toronto at various schools including Port Credit High School. She was the daughter of Weldon and Geraldine Rogers, and sister of Jake (Sheilah) Rogers. Joan moved out west to Calgary to teach at Mount Royal College and this is where she met Steve, who was also teaching there. She and Steve then went to Michigan, where Steve got his Masters degree and then moved to Edmonton where Steve attended medical school. Joan worked very hard and with the loving support of her relatives supported Steve during medical school while taking care of two young boys. Joan and Steve then moved back to Lakeview while Todd and Tyler were young where they developed some lifelong friendships with a great group of neighbours before moving to Lake Bonavista in 1972 where they raised their two boys. Joan went to work with Steve in 1980 and helped him greatly with his medical practice, until they retired in 1997. They enjoyed traveling and golf together for many years in Arizona and Victoria. Joan loved bridge and met many of her dear friends playing over the years. Joan was a people person with a magnetic personality and smile. We remember her playfulness while camping at Mara Lake and swimming in our backyard pool. Joan had many, many friends that she always enjoyed.
We would very much like to thank all of the friends and care providers that supported Joan and Steve in their home over the past few years including Margaret, Doris, Jean and Sheila. Maria from Home Health and the CBI team of lovely nurses.
A very special thank you to Nicola and the whole Home Instead team who enriched Mom and Dad’s life over the past two years with home support, smiles, outings and friendship.
Messages of remembrance may be left for the family at www.southcalgaryfuneralcentre.ca
