January 26, 1923 – February 6, 2012
Dr. John (Jack) Robert Settle passed away peacefully on February 6, 2012, just days after his 89th birthday. John was born in Edmonton in 1923. He joined the Army in 1943 and after relocation to Calgary married Phyllis Irene Francis. He was trained as an x-ray technician then became an accomplished physician, graduating from the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Medicine. In 1953 he began his career in Red Deer and later moved to Calgary in 1962. After the death of Phyllis in 1989, he married Coby Maria Blom in 1990. He continued his compassionate medical practice until only a couple of months ago. Jack had a love and talent for music; he enjoyed playing the piano for family and friends, at seniors’ homes, and church events. In recent years he began to play the harmonica, a more sociable and portable instrument, although his love for the piano remained constant even until his last moments. John will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Coby Settle, step-children Paul Rutten and Wendie Stacey, all of Calgary, and his children, Louise McCook of Calgary, Rev. Robert (Winnie) Settle of Edmonton, Douglas Settle (Linda Watt) of Sherwood Park, Lesley (Dave) Fegan of Beiseker, Rev. Cathy (Lorne) Taylor of Levack, ON, Betty (Robert) Gilgoff of Vancouver, BC, and Greg (Cheryl) Settle of Calgary. John also leaves behind 27 grandchildren and 31 (and 2 expected) great-grandchildren. John was predeceased by his brother, Owen, in 1933; his son, Stuart, in 1950; father, Rupert Settle, in 1960; mother, Marion Settle, in 1965; wife, Phyllis, in 1989; brother, Wilfred, in 1995; daughter-in-law, Mary Settle, in 1999; great-grandson, Enzo Settle, in 2009; son-in-law, Eric McCook, and sister, Laura Lipinski, in 2011. A celebration of his life will take place Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 1:30 pm at Wild Rose United Church, located at 1317 First Street NW, Calgary, with Rev. Linda Hunter officiating. There will be a relaxation on two hour street parking restrictions in the area around the church. The family wishes to thank the staff of Calgary Home Care and Santuari Hospice. If desired, donations may be made in memory of Jack to Wild Rose United Church and the Canadian Red Cross. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website www.fostersgardenchapel.ca.
