In loving memory of John Smandych, who passed away on Tuesday, January 6, 2026. John was the devoted husband of Jean Smandych for 72 years and loving father of Warren (Sue) Smandych. He was predeceased by his wife Jean and daughter Connie.
John will be deeply missed by all who knew him, especially his grandchildren Lindsay Lacey (Allan) and Denise Smandych (Scott MacWilliams) and by his great grandchildren Kai and Jaden Lacey.
John was a kind, caring and giving person who always put the needs of his family and friends before his own. He was an avid gardener whose yard was always the envy of the neighbourhood. John’s green thumb always ensured that family and friends had a supply of strawberries, rhubarb, and raspberries, which he never ate. John would spend hours caring for and nurturing raspberry canes to ensure that he could fill as many margarine containers as possible for us all. He will be deeply missed by everyone whose lives he touched.
A huge thank you to the staff of Brentwood Nursing Home for all their wonderful care and dedication.
A Celebration of John’s Life will be held at the Foster’s Garden Chapel, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society of Calgary (www.alzheimercalgary.ca) would be appreciated.
