Kathy Fung Har Louie (nee Ng) passed away peacefully at the age of 85 years on October 16, 2022. Kathy was the proud mother of five children, but the greatest joy in her life was being a grandmother to her eight grandchildren. She was a sister to nine siblings, a much-loved and respected sister in-law, a devoted aunt, and a loving friend to many.
Kathy was born in 1937 in Toi Shan, Canton, China to Chau Tong Eng and May Wong, and although she often spoke about the many hardships endured in her childhood, she also had fond memories of being an older sister to her many siblings. As a young girl she moved to Hong Kong with her father to attend Catholic school where she made lifelong friends, who she cherished throughout her life. In 1955, Kathy immigrated to Calgary, Canada shortly after marrying her husband Keong Louie in Hong Kong. Keong and Kathy lived in Calgary and were married for 36 years until Keong’s passing in 1991. With no prior knowledge of Canadian customs or the English language, Kathy’s strong work ethic and intelligence helped her to quickly adapt to Canadian culture, where she taught herself English in order to converse with customers at her and Keong’s family-owned restaurants. She will be remembered for her strength of character, perseverance, and tenacity, which helped her to push through many difficult struggles in her life.
Kathy worked extremely hard all her life, loved her family immensely, and instilled strong values in her children and grandchildren. She was a loving and devoted mother to Carl (Sandi), Anna, Connie (Glyn), Doreen (Colin), and Shelley (Brian). Her joy grew exponentially when she was blessed with grandchildren, Isabelle, Jordan, Christa (Eric), Carly, Drew (Gabriela), Bradley, Brenden, and Sydney. What Kathy cherished most were family get-togethers where her family devoured her delicious home-cooked dishes. She was generous with her time and was always willing to lend a hand, often volunteering to make food or pastries for large celebrations. She also loved to laugh and chat over food - anyone who visited her home would always be asked, “Have you eaten yet?”, and before you could answer, she would be looking for a plate of something savoury and delicious to offer. Her cooking and generosity will be sorely missed by all who were lucky enough to enjoy her meals and pastries.
Kathy hardly ever sat still - if she wasn’t cooking, she would be tending to her indoor plants, her outside garden, crocheting, or sewing. She had a love for nature and a natural ability to make all plants thrive. She was skilled at crocheting and could make any blanket or item of clothing just by looking at a picture of it. Many babies in our family were blessed with blankets, booties and hats that she lovingly crocheted.
In addition to her children, grandchildren, she is survived by siblings, Dalles (Catherine), Michael (Ellie), John (Marina), Kim Yuen, Susan (Wayne), Winnie (Andy), and Linda (Bruce). She is also survived by brother in-law, Albert (Christina), sisters in-law, Verna (Henry), and Lila (Sam), and numerous nephews and nieces. Kathy was predeceased by husband, Keong Louie; parents, Chau Tong Eng and May Wong; in -laws, Yuen and Lee Shee Louie, and brother, Tommy Ng.
She will be dearly missed by her family and friends, will never be far from our hearts, and forever in our memories.
Kathy’s family would like to thank Dr. Monica Chu, Dr. Kristina Quan, Kristina Johnsen, RN, the caring staff at AgeCare Walden Heights, Home Instead South Calgary, and Bayshore Healthcare NE for their time, patience, and attentive care of Kathy.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation to be held on Thursday, October 27, 2022 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Foster's Garden Chapel, 3220 - 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen's Park Cemetery). A funeral service will be held at Foster’s Garden Chapel on Friday, October 28, 2022 at 10:00 AM with Pastor Bill Mang officiating. An interment will follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
