July 20th 2019 -Calgary Alberta
Laurids Gjerlevsen, beloved son of Alfred and Margretha Gjerlevsen passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 20, 2019 at his residence, the Harbour Manor at Prince of Peace Village, Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Laurids was a much loved son, brother, husband, and uncle. A devoted friend and a trusted companion, his easygoing and agreeable nature endeared him to family and friends near and far.
Laurids immigrated to Canada from his native Denmark on June 28, 1966. A baker by trade and eager to make his mark he followed the work to the mining camps of Dauphin and Snow Lake Manitoba. His baking skill and tremendous work ethic earned him admiration and respect from patrons and employers alike.
In Calgary he worked for the Bowness and Italian Bakeries before he and his wife Doris (Dodo) opened the Riverpark Bakery and Pastry Shop. His exceptional Danish Pastries set the Riverpark Bakery apart. Saturday morning line ups were to be expected. Danish Braids, Pinwheels, Strudel and Krokana were among the specialties; each one as tasty as the other.
Laurids was a long serving and active member of Calgary's Danish Canadian Club. He enjoyed attending and hosting family dinners, playing cards with friends and could be a great story teller. For most of his life he was an active man. He enjoyed his daily walks and was an avid traveler.
He is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and special companion Gretha. Laurids was predeceased by his parents Alfred, Margretha and his siblings in Felsted Sogn, Denmark as well as his wife Doris (Watson) in Calgary. He will be missed by his many friends and loved ones.
Special thanks to the staff at Calgary's Prince of Peace Manor for their care and kindness in his final years.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, July 28, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at Foster’s Garden Chapel,
3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary, Alberta (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery).
