With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Les Sawatzky, who left this world peacefully at Rockyview General Hospital on Sunday, February 16, 2025, at the age of 70. Though his time here has come to an end, the impact he had on those who knew and loved him will never fade.
Born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, on February 7, 1955, to Isaac and Elizabeth Sawatzky, Les grew up in rural Saskatchewan, where he developed the resilience, work ethic, and kindness that would define him throughout his life, before eventually making his way to the Okanagan, then Calgary, and later returning to Saskatchewan before finally settling back in Calgary for retirement.
A respected consultant in the oil and gas industry, Les’s career took him around the world. Renowned for his sharp mind and integrity, he was unforgettable for his charisma and humour. His extensive travels nurtured a well-rounded perspective, yet he remained humble, never overshadowing his down-to-earth demeanor.
Les thrived in conversations, whether with family, long-time friends, neighbours, or new acquaintances, showcasing his inquisitive nature. He relished time with his grandchildren, whose distinct personalities and humour brought him immense joy, and he always had delightful stories to share about each of them.
Les’s true legacy lies in the small things—being the neighbourhood’s go-to bike mechanic, his resilience against the harsh winters without losing his cheer, and his dependability that made everyone feel valued. His absence leaves a profound void.
Les will be lovingly remembered by his wife and best friend, Sharon; his children and their families, Tracy (Mike) Gramlich, Trevor Sawatzky, Jackie (Tyler) Frolick, and Melissa (Morgan) Lukan; his cherished grandchildren Kennedy and Avery Gramlich, predeceased - Carter Harrison, Hadley Harrison, Ashton and Kale Frolick, and Marigold and Mirabelle Lukan. He is also survived by his father, Isaac (Margaret) Sawatzky; his siblings Kelvin (Marjorie), Brian (Loretta), Karen, and Lana; as well as many nieces, nephews, and dear family and friends. Les was predeceased by his mother, Elizabeth Sawatzky.
A man like Les cannot truly be lost - his love, laughter, and lessons live on in the hearts of those who knew him. His family finds comfort in the many stories and memories that will be shared for years to come.
Memorial donations in Les’s name may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society at their website https://cancer.ca/en/
As per his wishes, there will be no formal service. Instead, in honour of Les, take a moment to enjoy a good conversation over a cup of coffee and an old fashioned plain donut—he’d have wanted that.
