Lorraine Carol Irwin (Cocking) passed away with her loving husband by her side on Thursday, December 24th 2020 in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 71 years after a long, courageous battle with Multiple Sclerosis.
Lorraine was born in Toronto Ontario on June 4th, 1949 to parents Clifford and Constance Cocking. She married Barrie Irwin on September 17th, 1983 in Calgary Alberta. During their 37 years of marriage, they had many wonderful memories together. These included trips to Hawaii, Radium, and their many fun filled “date nights”. Lorraine proved to be a brave woman as this marriage came with 3 teenage daughters and she became an incredible step-mom to Catherine (Glen) Smith, Carrie (David) Elhard and Christy (Duane) Erion. Lorraine was a loving Grandma and Nana to 6 beautiful grandchildren Cale (Brittany), Ava, Brenden (Sarah), Colton, Joel and Nolan. She is survived by her siblings June (Don) Zabel, Jim (Bea) Cocking and Barbara (Norm) Waksel and many wonderful nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
For many years Lorraine was actively involved in the Salvation Army church playing her horn in the brass band, leading the timbrel brigade, singing in the church songsters and proudly marching in the Calgary Stampede parade. She was passionate about her love for Jesus, her husband, children, grandchildren, family and friends. Lorraine dedicated 35 years of her life working as a medical administrative assistant in Toronto and Calgary. She eventually retired from the Peter Lougheed Hospital here in Calgary where she had worked the last 17 years of her career. Lorraine is remembered for her witty sense of humour that brought joy and laughter to others. She volunteered at events in her clown costume to entertain children and bring smiles to their faces. She cherished her grandchildren and loved to make crafts with them. The last several years she resided at Newport Harbour Care Centre. There she formed close relationships with the incredible staff and Lorraine made them feel appreciated, loved and frequently made them laugh. Our family cannot thank the Newport staff enough for their tireless care and love they gave to her.
Her favourite bible verse was Romans 8:28. She lived out this verse in her life, as it wasn’t always easy. Life brought challenges, especially after her diagnosis. She fought hard, overcame many physical challenges and graciously accepted the ones she couldn’t. Even through hard times, her humour shined through. Lorraine will be dearly missed but we have comfort knowing she is with her Heavenly Father and at peace now.
Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, a private family viewing will be held on December 29th 2020.
A Celebration of Life will be held later in the Spring of 2021.
