Born in Beloit, Wisconsin, Lucille grew up on a farm north of Rockford, Illinois, the second of three daughters born to Clifford and Esther Holmes. She earned a Bachelor or Arts in History with a Phi Kappa Phi distinction from Illinois Wesleyan University, along with a Masters’ degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois. After a pause in her career to raise her children, she worked for several years at the North Suburban Public Library based in Loves Park, Illinois, eventually being appointed the head librarian at the Roscoe branch prior to moving to Calgary.
Spirituality was always an important part of Lucille’s life. After being raised in the Methodist church, she found her spiritual home at the Christ Moravian Church in Calgary, where she was an active member. In her free time, she enjoyed crocheting and playing the piano; among her favorites were hymns, ragtime, Beethoven, and showtunes. She was a voracious reader and avid baker and gardener. She also volunteered with Calgary Newcomers. Family, especially her granddaughter, was always a joy for her; she would travel long distances to spend time with them and greatly enjoyed hosting when people came to visit.
Lucille joins her beloved parents and sister Evelyn in the next world. She is survived by her husband; Roy, children; Jim (Sandy) and Laurel, granddaughter; Genevieve, sister; Karen (Robert) Snyder, and several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Lucille’s Life will be held at Christ Moravian Church, (600 Acadia Dr. SE, Calgary), on Monday, March 30 at 2:00 pm. A livestream will be available for those unable to attend in person. www.youtube.com/@ChristMoravianChurch/streams
