Born June 8, 1954, in Calgary, Alberta, Neil William Collin passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, surrounded by family. On his last night, he enjoyed watching the Calgary Flames game with his boys, a moment cherished by his wife and sons.
Neil is survived by his loving wife, Gretchen; his sons Jesse, Dallas (Kristi), and Brett (Lynsie); his daughters Amber and April; his grandchildren Ashton, Trent, Alex, Halden, and Riley. He is predeceased by his parents Cy and Betty Collin, his sister Susan, his brother Gordon, and his first wife, Virginia (Ginny) Collin.
Neil was born and raised in Calgary, where he built a life deeply rooted in family and community. He worked for many years as the manager of student residences at SAIT, where one of his proudest achievements was coordinating the use of the residences for athletes during the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. Later, he left SAIT to start his own business, Alberta Educational Resources, aimed at helping young people find paths forward in post-secondary education.
Following the passing of his first wife, Virginia, in 1996, Neil stepped away from the business to raise his three sons as a single father. In 2000, Neil met his second wife, Gretchen, through one of the internet’s first online romances, beginning a new chapter of his life filled with love and companionship. They were married in 2002.
In his later years, Neil's passion for barbecuing led him to work at Barbecues Galore, where he was known for his respectful and fair management, expertise, and enthusiasm for a perfectly cooked steak.
In keeping with Neil's wishes, no Service will be held. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice.
