Ray grew up in Calgary's Victoria Park where he made life-long friends and learned the value of community. In his youth he was a member of the YMCA and Boys & Girls Club. Over the years he had numerous circles of friends through work and his widely varied interests. After graduating from Western Canada High School, Ray worked at a few different jobs. He then headed to the Yukon to become a truck driver. In 1952, back in Calgary, he married Dorothy Anderson and they started a family shortly thereafter. His next job was with Amoco Petroleum (BP) from which he retired after 30 years, then went on to work a few more years with Superior Propane. Over the years, Ray was involved in curling, square dancing, golfing, camping, Renfrew Church choir, and numerous other pursuits, but he was always most passionate about his music. For over twenty years, Ray was the banjo player and band leader for The Renfrew Ramblers, most recently he played with the accompanying ensemble for the Harmonica Tableau. It gave him great joy to play with other musicians before an audience.
The people in Ray's life meant the world to him. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. Ray delighted in their successes and was there for every crisis. Ever a gentleman and always ready with a smile, a joke or a hug, Ray was there for every one of his family and friends.
Ray is survived by his loving wife Dorothy of nearly 70 years, daughter Barb (Robert), son Daryl (Christine), daughter Joan, seven much-loved grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
