AVIS DE DÉCÈS

Raymond Gary Rystephanick

24 août 1940 – 19 février 2024
Avis de décès de Raymond Gary Rystephanick
AUX SOINS DE

South Calgary Funeral Centre and Crematorium

Dr. Raymond Gary Rystephanick died suddenly at home on February 19, 2024.

Ray was born August 24, 1940 in Erickson, Manitoba and spent his childhood in Sandy Lake, Manitoba.

Ray acquired his Bsc.'62 (Honours Physics) and Msc.'63 from the University of Manitoba and his PhD '65 in Theoretical Physics from the University of British Columbia. After a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at McMaster University, he embarked on his academic career as a Professor of Physics and Assistant Dean of Science at the University of Regina, retiring in 1998.

Ray is survived by his wife of more than 60 years, Maxine (nee Francis), son Brett (Jennifer Shelton), grandchildren Declyn and Garrett. He is also survived by his step-mother Tillie Rystephanick, sisters Patricia, Betsy, Jan and brother Gerry as well as numerous nephews, nieces, grand- nephews and grand-nieces. Ray was predeceased by his father Peter Rystephanuk.

Ray and Maxine met at U of M where they were both students and married in 1963; son Brett was born in 1970. They moved to Regina Beach in 1979 and upon retirement became full time RV'ers until 2014 when he and Maxine settled in Calgary. Their travels took them all over North America, into Mexico and vacation cruises to Western Europe, South America and South Asia when it was too cool to live in the RV.

Curling was big part of Ray's life both as a curler and as an administrator. The existing Callie Curling Club in Regina was built while he was Club President and he held several positions with the Saskatchewan Curling Association. He also was a referee for minor hockey and an umpire for fastball.

Live music and live theatre was his passion and he always subscribed to the symphony, opera, and theatre programs. Attending opening night at the Royal Opera House in Covent Gardens in London, England was a highlight of his travels.

Cremation has taken place and in accordance with Ray's wishes, there will be no service.

Memorial donations can be made directly to the Kidney Foundation of Canada or to a charity of your choice.
