Robert “Bob” Reginald Barnes passed away unexpectedly at the Foothills Medical Centre on April 16, 2026 at the age of 72. He was born on February 10, 1954 in Calgary, Alberta to Reginald & Shirley Barnes making him a lifelong Calgarian. Bob joined The Boy Scouts of Canada at a young age, awakening in him a passion for the outdoors. In 1968 at the age of 14, he became a Queen Scout, the highest honour for youth members, with certificates signed by the Governor General of Canada. Due to his experiences in Scouts, Bob loved spending as much time outdoors as he could; skiing, camping, back packing, hiking and biking. He also played hockey until 2023, played on a men’s ringette team and loved to work out at the gym or at home.
Bob cherished his family and loved spending time together. He was a ringette coach for both girls for 24 years and the teams became a family as well. He enjoyed watching Erin play ringette after he no longer coached. His girls were his world and he provided them with many opportunities. Notably taking Erin to Europe for ringette and doing a road trip with Amie down to Phoenix, Arizona for her practicum at the zoo there. Bob also took both girls to Alaska to backpack over the Chilkoot Pass after completing it on his own a few years prior.
Bob and Lorna loved travelling. They headed to Mexico many times to soak up the sun and the sea. They also did a bigger trip to France, Germany, and the Netherlands in 2014 with close friends. In 2017, Bob and Lorna walked the Camino de Santiago in Spain.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Lorna of 48 years; his children and their families, Amie Barnes, and Erin & Preston Rudd. Bob was predeceased by his parents Shirley and Reg Barnes and is survived by his siblings Jo-Ann Schock, Doug Barnes and Duncan Barnes.
A Celebration of Bob’s Life will be held at Foster's Garden Chapel, 3220 - 4 Street N.W., Calgary AB, on Thursday, April 23, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. If friends so desire, memorial donations in Bob’s name will be gratefully accepted by the Heart & Stroke Foundation or Parachutes for Pets.
